Latin America Lives in Risk

Ferrari, Hamilton. 2019

In this year, the parlament of Colombia tried to approve a tax reform - which intended to raise taxes on several products - besides a health system reform all of this during the worst pandemics of the last hundred years. As a result of this, the population mobilized against all those reforms, being, one more time, repressed with great violence, resulting in the death of at least 30 persons and many women.

The president of Colombia, Iván Duque, right-wing, militarized the questions, sending national forces to the cities, increasing the violence in Colombia. More than this, analysts say that Duque is unconnected from the real Colombia, in which more than 42% population is poor. The UN rights office has condemned the “excessive use of force” by security officers in Colombia after numerous deaths during days of protests.

In Central America, the Salvadorian parliament, with the full support of president Nayib Bukele, left-wing, overthrew the supreme court of the country and the general attorney. The Nuevas Ideas party, Bukele ́s party, and the one who proposed the overthrow said that the decisions made by the supreme court aggravated the pandemic in the country, besides supporting the opposition party, Alianza Republica Nacionalista. Protesters mobilized across the country, claiming for the respect of the democracy and the constitution, pointing out, alongside the opposition of Bukele, that what happened was a coup.

Kamala Harris said, on her Twitter:

“We have deep concerns about El Salvador’s democracy, considering the National Assembly’s vote to remove constitutional court judges. An independent judiciary is critical to a healthy democracy – and a strong economy.”

It does not matter the political orientation of the people who occupy the most powerful office of the Latin American countries. The democracy of the continent is suffering by all sides, weakening its institutions, and most critically, the Latin American population is getting poorer and threatened by the forces of the state.
